Abstract:This paper presents a newly discoveredhistorical document regarding Liang Sicheng’s urgentconservation efforts in December 1939. During a surveyof historic buildings in Sichuan and Xikang, the Societyfor Research in Chinese Architecture found extensivedamage to the Qianfoya Grottoes in Guangyuan due toroad construction. Alarmed by reports that the remainingstatues were to be destroyed in a planned road wideningproject, Liang Sicheng wrote urgent letters to theMinistry of Transport and the Central Committee forthe Preservation of Antiquities. His letter called for animmediate halt to the destructive plan and urged theMinistry of Transport to issue orders to protect thesecultural monuments during road construction. This papersheds light on Liang Sicheng’s conservation advocacythrough the introduction of this significant historicaldocument, contributing to academic research in the fieldof relevant historical studies.
