Abstract:The article discusses the design concept of the “Palace of Heaven” of the Yuhuangge through route composition and line of sight analysis. It also focuses on the gate area, analyzing how architectural language was used to create a sense of walking through clouds and fog. Building archaeology is carried out on the “Xuanzhen Tianshang Fang” space node, examining stone carving themes such as dragon carving and cloud patterns. A structural study is also conducted on the main hall, Hongyun Hall, discussing its basic reconstruction history based on observation of the structural frame. Finally, the reconstruction history of the temple and the changes in its use between Buddhists and Taoists are reconstructed based on information from inscriptions and other local documents. The findings suggest that, despite its location on the empire’s frontier, Tonghai played a significant role in the cultural output of the central government and has a mixed culture of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.
