Abstract:There is a growing interest in Danish architect J?rn Utzon’s courtyard housing schemes, alongside an emerging international recognition of his professional career. However, previous scholarship only included limited materials from Utzon’s professional career, compared to what is now available in The Utzon Archives. Based on a detailed survey of accessible materials in this archive as well as interviews with Utzon’s family and affiffiffiliates, this article shows that Utzon’s courtyard housing schemes closely reflflected his architectural philosophy in general and thoughts on modern dwellings in particular, cultivated by the ideas and ideals held by Lin Yutang, Alvar Aalto, and Osvald Sirén.
